Laura has Crohn's Disease and has been volunteering with the Edinburgh Network since 2015.

I’ve been volunteering with the Edinburgh Network since 2015. I got involved with the charity shortly after being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease as a way of understanding the condition better and meeting other people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Through volunteering I’ve taken on the Network’s social media, written articles for our annual newsletter and had the opportunity to attend the IBD Blueprint launch at the Scottish Parliament. I’ve also helped organise and support local events such as our winter ceilidh and a social evening to mark World IBD Day.

Our local presence at these events is really appreciated by the fundraisers and their families, which makes it all worthwhile.

My favourite activity is supporting events such as the Edinburgh Marathon and WALK IT. They raise a lot of money and it’s very rewarding to be there on the day to cheer everyone on and say a big thank you.

I would encourage anyone who is thinking about volunteering with us to go for it! There are roles and activities to suit everyone and you’ll gain a lot more than you expect from it. The key for me is we’re helping to support one day finding a cure for Crohn’s and Colitis.

Want to volunteer with us?

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, develop new skills and make a difference to everyone affected by Crohn's and Colitis.
