Emma - Networks’ Coordinated Treasurer

"Knowing that I’ve helped to make a difference is important to me and this has come in many guises."

Emma started volunteering as a Networks' Coordinated Treasurer in 2011 having seen an advert in one of the charity's publications.

I came across Crohn's & Colitis UK in 2009 when I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and looking for information about the condition. When I was feeling better, I decided that I wanted to give something back to the charity and took on the role of treasurer supporting 8 Networks. This number has now grown across England and Wales. As it didn't clash with my treasurer role, I joined the Mid Essex team following a request for volunteers to help re-form the network.

There are many different roles available and something to suit everyone. Without volunteers the charity couldn't function as well as it does.

Local Network Volunteer

Knowing that I’ve helped to make a difference is important to me. I've helped to set up a new venue for an educational meeting for the Local Network, which attracted people who had never previously attended. I have been able to remove the financial headaches for the Networks I support, plus I've done some fundraising for the charity and raising awareness too.

Volunteering with a charity that understands the condition you, a friend, colleague or family is living with means you don't have to explain those times when you need to take a step back. It's a great way of learning new skills, meeting new people and a good talking point at job interviews. There's also that feeling of satisfaction - you can look back and say "I did that".
