Angus - Networks’ Coordinated Treasurer

"The Crohns & Colitis UK volunteer community offers a very welcoming environment where support, sharing and understanding are key features."

Angus got involved in the Edinburgh Network in 2008 and took on the role of Networks' Coordinated Treasurer in 2011. Angus is recognised as one of our Community Champions due to his commitment and hard work.

Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006, I have first-hand experience of what it is like being newly diagnosed with IBD and the impact that the symptoms can have on day to day life. I found that very few people had an understanding of these conditions and was keen to meet others in my local area affected by IBD in order to share experiences and receive and provide support. I jumped at the chance to join the relaunched Edinburgh Network and have been volunteering with the charity ever since.

My role as Coordinated Treasurer requires one member of the Network called a 'Link Volunteer' to liaise with me to pay in money to the Network account, pay invoices and expenses and keep a record of balances and transactions on behalf of the Network. I also arrange the Networks' end of year accounts so Link Volunteers have much less administration to do.

A few hours a month can make a real difference in helping the charity with its aim of improving the lives of those living with Crohn's or Colitis. You'll have a lot of fun, develop new skills and make lifelong friendships.

On a personal level my proudest achievement is co-founding the Spring Ball. This has quickly become one of the hottest tickets on the Edinburgh social scene and in five years raised over £200,000 for Crohns & Colitis UK and IBD research in Scotland.

If you're thinking about volunteering, give it a try. The volunteer community offers a very welcoming environment where support, sharing and understanding are key features. A few hours a month can make a real difference in helping the charity with its aim of improving the lives of those living with Crohn's or Colitis. You'll have a lot of fun, develop new skills and make lifelong friendships. The strength, loyalty and dedication of the Edinburgh volunteers makes me extremely proud.
