"It truly is so rewarding to be part of something that visibly makes an impact"

I have volunteered for Crohn's & Colitis UK for a number of years, starting on their support line and more recently as part of the readers’ panel. I facilitate workshops outside of the charity and thought it would be great to put that skill to use with Crohn's & Colitis UK, but most importantly, I have a passion to help others, and by doing this I can help bring people together and assist in them getting the support from like-minded people. Most of us thanks to COVID are now very familiar with the power of technology and it excited me to see this being used in a way to support those with Crohn's or Colitis.

I love the variety that comes from the virtual social events. Every event that I host is different; we talk about different topics, share unique stories, and genuinely help others. It truly is so rewarding to be part of something that visibly makes an impact; be that to someone newly diagnosed who just doesn’t know where to turn, to an experienced individual with Crohn's or Colitis who has been met with a new hurdle that they want to talk to others about. I also love to virtually meet new people and hear their stories, and learn from them.

Virtual Social Event Volunteer

This is a great role if you want to volunteer from your home at pre-decided times that suit you, in a way which you know will impact at least one person each time you join the meeting. If you like having a chat with others and want to support others to feel empowered to do the same, this is a great opportunity for you.

Hosting the first ever virtual event for parents and carers whose child has Crohn's or Colitis is probably my highlight so far. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the events I have hosted but being part of this event was brilliant; it really opened my eyes to the differing needs of parents vs. patients and I could see the genuine need for events like these, so finishing that event left me feeling so rewarded and grateful that this event happened for the parents and carers.
