IBD Nurse Specialist Audit & Nursing Update - December 2022

Published 01 December 2022

As 2022 comes to a close, we wanted to provide an update on all the work we're doing to support IBD Nurse Specialists across the UK.

IBD Nurse Specialist Audit 2022

Crohn’s & Colitis UK know how important IBD Nurse Specialists are to everyone living with IBD and our aim is that every person with IBD has access to a suitably qualified IBD Nurse Specialist and over the next month we’ll be repeating the audit to discover more about how they are trained, the work that they do, and if numbers of IBD Nurse Specialists are still increasing.

We need as many IBD Nurse Specialists as possible to complete our audit to give us a complete picture of what the workforce looks like. Please share this news, and the link to the audit, with any IBD Nurse Specialist colleagues in your team and encourage them to complete it.

Crohn’s & Colitis UK Nursing Programme

The Crohn’s & Colitis UK Nursing Programme continues to grow. Since 2019 we have recruited 29 Crohn’s & Colitis UK Nurse Specialists across the UK. We’re working together to support them to broaden their professional experience, develop their careers, and improve patient outcomes.

We’ll be recruiting into our RCN Credentialing and MSc Pathways again in Spring 2023, so look out for more news on the RCN Network and our website. You can read more about our Nursing Programme and the fantastic outcomes we’ve had to date here.

Advice Line Training

Our hugely popular Advice Line Training will be running again next year, with the first occurrence in April 2023. This gives IBD Nurse Specialists skills, tips, and tricks for managing and running their advice lines. The training has proved very valuable, and we recommend it for all IBD Nurse Specialists. Watch the RCN Facebook page for future application dates - places go fast! More information here.

Find an IBD Nurse Specialist Map

The Find an IBD Nurse Specialist Map is a great resource both for people with IBD and healthcare professionals - Find an IBD Nurse Specialist Map.

Framework for Professional Practice for Nurses Working in IBD (Adult and Paediatric)

We have been working with the RCN IBD Network to publish a career framework for IBD Nurse Specialists. Due to be published in early 2023, it guides and supports nurses at all levels as they develop their roles and careers, giving direction for those starting in new roles, but also supporting the move to advanced and consultant level. We’ll keep you updated with further details on the progress of the framework in 2023.

Please share this update and the IBD Nurse Specialist Audit 2022 with any IBD Nurse Specialists in your teams. The audit will take 5-10 minutes of their time to complete and will help us continue to support all IBD Nurse Specialists.

If you have any questions regarding this, please contact ibdnursing@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk.
