IBD Advice Lines

If a patient becomes unwell between appointments, many IBD services across the UK provide an advice line they can call for help.

The advice lines are usually run by IBD Nurse Specialists who can provide expert support and advice about Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but other members of the local IBD team (e.g. doctors or trained administrative staff) may answer them, too.

IBD Nurse Specialists have advanced knowledge of IBD and they can assess and advise patients over the phone. They may also help organise appointments if they think they’re needed.

Use the search tool above to find out about your local advice line.

How do advice lines work?

They’re usually a telephone answering service or email address where a patient can leave a message requesting help and someone will respond to them as soon as possible.

When leaving a message for the advice line you should providing the following information, as without this the IBD team will not be able to call you back:
• Name and date of birth
• NHS number (if known)
• Your telephone number and the best time to receive a return call
• A brief outline of why you are calling

What are advice lines for?

They’re for IBD patients who:

  • Are having a flare-up or worried about adverse symptoms
  • Are in between appointments
  • Need advice direct from an IBD Nurse Specialist

They shouldn’t be used:

  • In an emergency / as an emergency contact
  • To arrange or change routine appointments
  • For more general information about Crohn's or Colitis

For more general information about Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and other forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), patients can contact the Crohn’s & Colitis UK Helpline.

What to do in an emergency

If you need urgent attention DO NOT use the Advice Line service but please contact your GP/local urgent care centre, ring 111 (or your out of hours service) or attend your local A&E.

Out of hours services differ slightly in each UK country:
