Motivation: our greatest achievements

Cartoon people surrounded by flags

At the start of the year, our Not Every Disability is Visible campaign was making a difference throughout the UK. Many pubs and restaurants were changing their toilet signs to accommodate invisible disabilities. As well as training staff to help support people with Crohn’s and Colitis. But when the pandemic took hold, we switched to fighting to keep public toilets open instead.

I noticed all the toilets, including the disabled toilets, were shut. Half-way round our walk I had the normal urgency to go to the loo, but we had to leave and go home. I feel very prohibited. Where can I go to now? It’s very disheartening.

Even when shops and other services reopened, public toilets remained shut. So, we continued to raise awareness of what was happening and what that meant to our community of people living with Crohn's and Colitis. Thanks to your support, our campaign appeared in many national newspapers and on television.

As a result, our safety guidance was given to all local authorities. Many committed to reopen accessible toilets during lockdown and continue to work with us to make sure 'Not Every Disability' is Visible notices are now displayed in public and accessible toilets. We hope the latest phase of this campaign, focused on the workplace, will be just as successful.

But that's not all! We're so proud of the following achievements and awards:

  • Although we couldn't fund new research, we managed to complete eight existing projects, including a new strategy to limit fibrosis/ scarring in Crohn's, Genetic (microRNA) profiling in IBD, and self-management for pain with IBD.
  • Nearly 2,000 of you, including healthcare professionals and politicians, took action during Awareness Week. The feedback from our members was incredible – "This was amazing; for the first time I didn't feel alone. Thank you for sharing".
  • We won five awards (yes, five!) at the 2020 Communiqué Awards, which recognise excellence in healthcare communications and projects that make a real difference to patients – our 'Not Every Disability' campaign scooped up two awards, while the ground-breaking In My Shoes app won three.
  • We won a people's choice award at the Charity Film Awards 2020 for our film 'It Takes Guts'.
  • Our WALK IT events won Best Mass Participation Event at the Charity Event Awards 2020.
  • We launched our first Crohn's and Colitis branded lorry, with our partners TruckSkinz, and ran a competition to name it – Can't Wait Freight was the clear winner!
  • As many patients could not speak directly to their IBD teams, we stepped into the information gap, reassuring you and relieving pressure on the NHS – 95% of you found our information helpful during the crisis.
  • We also won Self-Management Resource of the Year, in collaboration with the Scottish government and three health boards, for the development of a flare card that was co-designed by people with Crohn's and Colitis.
  • We joined coalitions, teaming up with other charities to call for more support for people at higher risk of complications from coronavirus.
