Nominate your IBD Nurse of the year now!

Published 07 October 2016

The British Journal of Nursing Awards 2017 are now open for nominations.

These awards recognise and celebrate the nurse who goes above and beyond. The nurse who puts patient care at the heart of their role. The nurse who inspires. The nurse who drives the profession. The nurses who deserve to be celebrated.

Crohn’s & Colitis UK are the proud supporters and co-judge for the Gastrointestinal/IBD Nurse of the Year category. Gastrointestinal and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) nurses are providing vital care to thousands of people every day and deserve recognition as they can often be the difference between patients having a good or a poor quality of life.

Last year’s winner Kay Greveson -  Lead Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Nurse Specialist, Royal Free London Foundation NHS Trust -  was nominated for going above and beyond for her work with those diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis.

To be nominated and win the British Journal of Nursing IBD/ Gastrointestinal nurse of the year 2016 was such an honour and an overwhelming experience, particularly as it’s a subject and  job that I am so passionate about.  Nurse specialists are continually involved in so many projects, service development and research that often goes unnoticed. I think winning an award such as this not only raises the profile of nursing but also that of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I encourage all nurses to nominate a colleague, or even to nominate work that they have done themselves and that they are proud of. What may be ‘just part of the job’ for one person could be an innovation and help IBD patients or professionals elsewhere.

As well as providing quality care to her patients, Kay has set up the IBD passport, an award winning website that aims to provide comprehensive, practical and reliable information on all aspects of travelling with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. IBD Passport is the first website to combine this information into one resource to help plan a trip with confidence.

We often learn from patients about how their nurse has gone way beyond the four walls of the hospital to support them in their care, but is there any other specialist who remains as shy about their dedication, achievements and the sheer positive impact they have on many people’s lives? They are probably too busy to think about it, which is why we must celebrate and recognise all the nurses who make such a difference. Please make a nomination for yourself -  or on behalf of a nurse you know - and help to highlight the critical contribution of nurses.
