The two charities are inviting researchers to submit applications and will award up to £70,000 for one research project.
Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD aurum), we require the incidence and prevalence of these conditions in the UK as of 2019, categorised for age (yearly for children, range for adults), gender, ethnicity, geographical region, socioeconomic status and age within geographical region.
We would also like to know how many people diagnosed with these conditions, were previously diagnosed or treated for irritable bowel syndrome.
We are hoping to find out preliminary prevalence figures by the beginning of May, to tie in with World IBD Day 2020.
It is a commonly-held view that the number used most to quantify prevalence and incidence of Crohn’s and Colitis in the UK misrepresents the actuality, which is significantly higher.
Estimates vary widely from 300,000 to 600,000. Understanding the epidemiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is crucial to our understanding of Crohn’s and Colitis, quantifying the burden and raising the profile of these conditions.
In partnership with Coeliac UK, we are calling for applications from researchers to undertake a UK-wide study to describe the occurrence of IBD, stratified by age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity and geographical location.
These figures are essential to help us further our understanding of IBD and shine a light on the real number of people living with the condition.

Director of Research
The closing date for applications is 23 September 2019. For more information please visit the Coeliac UK website.
