The Government are considering changes to the criteria for getting a Blue Badge in England. This could make it easier for people with non-physical or hidden disabilities such as Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis to get a Blue Badge.
We recently asked you to complete a survey telling us what you think about the Blue Badge system. We had over 4,000 responses, so thank you for making your voice heard.

We are thrilled that so many supporters responded to our survey as we have been able to use this information to help build our case for change in responding to the Government, ensuring the voice of our supporters is at the heart of this process.

91% of people who completed our survey said that they (or their family member living with Crohn’s or Colitis) often struggle to go out regularly due to needing the toilet.
Therefore, Blue Badges, which allow parking close to shops and facilities, could be a positive step in allowing people with Crohn’s and Colitis to leave their house feeling confident that they can reach a toilet in time.

When many people think of Blue Badges they often think of people in wheelchairs or with walking sticks. However, ‘invisible’ disabilities such as Crohn’s or Colitis have a negative effect on all aspects of body and wellbeing. The fear of having an accident in public can be crippling and incredibly isolating.

People living with Crohn’s and Colitis can be disadvantaged as they may not look unwell but are often struggling with symptoms that affect all aspects of their lives. So we want to support those who would benefit from having a Blue Badge, raising awareness that Not every disability is visible.

75% of people surveyed said that they or a family member have had an accident in public because they couldn't find parking in time to reach a toilet.
Thank you to everyone who took action and completed the survey and told us what you think about the Blue Badge criteria.
We will now use your feedback to take steps to ensure that the voices of people with Crohn's and Colitis are heard by the government on this issue.
