We’re shaping the future of IBD nursing, and you can help

Published 11 February 2022

We are working with a team of other IBD nurse specialists and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) to develop a career framework for IBD nurse specialists.

So, we spoke to Isobel, nurse consultant in gastroenterology at the Royal Free Hospital and IBD nursing development lead here at Crohn’s & Colitis UK. Isobel tells us what the framework is, why it’s so important, and how you can get involved.

At the end of the interview, we ask you to have your say on what skills and resources you think an IBD nurse needs.

What is the RCN IBD nursing framework?

The framework will guide and support nurses as they develop their roles and career. We want them to have a clear direction when they start in new roles and as they progress through their career. With this framework they will know exactly how they should work with people affected by Crohn's and Colitis, provide education, take on leadership roles, and carry out research.

Who is the framework for, and why do they need it?

Nurses from all backgrounds meet people living with Crohn’s and Colitis but there’s currently no clear way for them to move through the stages of IBD specialist nursing. A clear role description for nurses working in specialist, advanced, and consultant nurse roles will help them work with their managers to design their day-to-day work and service.

As an IBD nurse consultant, what will this framework mean for you?

The framework will be a vital resource for the nurses in my team and for myself.

It will provide a benchmark to help us define how we work but will also allow me as a leader to really show how well my nurses are working.  We will also be able to identify areas where they want and need to develop their skills and expertise, so I can better facilitate their development.

Why is it important to hear from people living with Crohn’s and Colitis?

All IBD nurses aim to deliver care that is centred directly on their patients’ needs. Involving you in the framework development will allow your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to influence how we define what IBD nurses do to meet those needs. It will enable us to really ensure that our knowledge and skill develop in a way that keeps you at the heart of our careers and practice.

How will you use feedback?

Should you decide to volunteer, the project group will talk you through the current draft of the framework. We already have an idea of the structure and format for you to feedback on. We’ll ask you questions about the content, such as what should be included, what’s not clear to you, and whether it’s patient-focussed enough. Your feedback will then be incorporated into the final publication.

What next?

If you’re a patient with an IBD nurse and would like to offer your feedback or thoughts on the skills they require and the work they do for you, please email us at ibdnursing@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk. Tell us your name and please provide a phone number. One of our IBD Nursing team will then be in touch to get your valuable feedback.
