Impact of a diet on the gut microbiome

Researchers at the University of Glasgow are looking to understand the impact of a diet (UC-TREAT) on the gut microbiome of adults with colitis who have no active disease and are on medication.

Studies show that bacteria living in the gut may play a role in the onset and severity of ulcerative colitis. In individuals without symptoms (in remission), fermented foods, fibre from plant food, and foods rich in natural anti-inflammatory molecules and antioxidants may improve the makeup of the gut bacteria and therefore improve disease markers in people with ulcerative colitis.

The study is recruiting adults (≥16 years old) with ulcerative colitis currently in remission and on a stable dose of medication for at least 2 months.

This study lasts for around 1 month, where participants will be asked to eat high fibre and fermented foods, berries, and a multivitamin every day for 2 weeks. Throughout this time, we ask participants to collect poo and urine samples on 4 occasions at home. Participants will also need to visit the research unit at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary on 3 separate occasions to answer questionnaires and provide a small sample of blood. You must live in Scotland to take part in this study.

All travel expenses incurred during travel to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary will be reimbursed, and participants will receive £100 in shopping vouchers.

By entering your details, you are not committing to take part, but your contact details will be forwarded to the researcher who will get in touch with you directly with more information. You will have the opportunity to change your mind at any time.

This research study is NOT organised by Crohn's & Colitis UK and, therefore, we cannot take responsibility for your involvement in the research.
