Examining emotion recognition in individuals living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Researchers at the University of Sunderland are looking for adults living with Crohn's or Colitis, as well as those who do not have the conditions, to complete a short online questionnaire looking at the difference in emotion recognition in those living with and without Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

This study by researchers at the University of Sunderland is looking to understand more about emotion recognition and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Research suggests that changes in the gut microbiome (the community of microorganisms in the digestive tract) might affect how well people recognise emotions. This study aims to explore whether individuals living with IBD experience differences in emotion recognition compared to those without IBD. The researchers also want to look at if conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression affect emotion recognition.

The researchers want to compare experiences of people who live with IBD and those who do not. So both people diagnosed with IBD and those without are eligible to take part. Participants should have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (e.g., through glasses or contact lenses). As this study focuses on emotion recognition, individuals with conditions that might affect this ability—such as autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, or prosopagnosia (face blindness)—are not eligible to take part.

This is an online study and should take around 15-20 minutes to complete.

By entering your details, you are not committing to take part, but you will be forwarded to the study website for more information. You will have the opportunity to change your mind at any time.

This research study is NOT organised by Crohn's & Colitis UK and, therefore, we cannot take responsibility for your involvement in the research.
