Can a cherry juice supplement help with Colitis symptoms?

Researchers at University of Hertfordshire are looking for people who have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis for at least 6 months to take place in a trial to see if a cherry juice supplement can help relieve symptoms of mild to moderate Ulcerative Colitis.

This study is aimed at looking at the effectiveness of a cherry juice supplement in helping with mild to moderate Colitis symptoms. Cherry juice has been shown to help with Ulcerative Colitis symptoms in animals, but this has not yet been trialed in humans. It is thought that the high content of antioxidants may help lessen the effects of inflammation in the colon. If this effect is the same in humans, this trial could lead to a relatively cheap and simple method for helping people living with colitis.

Participants in this trial will be randomly placed in either an experimental group or a control group. The experimental group will be given 60ml of cherry juice supplement every day for 6 weeks, while the control group will be given a placebo. You will then be asked to take a questionnaire about the current state of your Colitis, with blood and stool samples taken at the beginning and end of the 6-week course.

To take part, you:

  • Must have a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis for at least 6 months
  • Must be currently experiencing mild to moderate symptoms
  • Must be aged between 18 and 65
  • Must have been on the same medication for the last 3 months
  • Must NOT have diabetes, HIV, Hepatitis B or C, abscesses, food allergies to cherries, or unstable medical conditions that would prevent you from completing the study
  • Must be able to travel to Hertfordshire

Please be aware that when the researcher gets in touch, their emails may arrive in your junk or spam folder. Make sure to check these folders if you're expecting to hear from them.

By entering your details, you are not committing to take part, but your contact details will be forwarded to the researcher who will get in touch with you directly with more information. You will have the opportunity to change your mind at any time.

This research study is NOT organised or funded by Crohn's & Colitis UK and, therefore, we cannot take responsibility for your involvement in the research.
