Philip - Local Network

"Volunteering has helped me understand IBD from a patients’ perspective".

Philip has been volunteering with the East and South East London Network since 2017.

As a PhD student researcher and an immunologist, I am familiar with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).  I got involved with the East and South East London Network because I have friends who live with IBD and my personal interests in immunology. I wanted to understand more about IBD and how if affects people so I could help raise awareness to the general public and make a difference to other people’s lives. As a I have been involved in my department’s research student committee organising talks and events, I thought I would use these skills as a Network volunteer. My time commitments are relatively flexible being a student which works out really well for volunteering with the charity. I look after the Network's social media and help with event ideas and organising activities.

Volunteering has helped me in many different aspects. It has allowed me to join a team working towards a common goal, especially since PhD students are typically in their own world doing their own thing. It has also helped me is in understanding the disease from the patients’ perspectives. The biggest highlight in my volunteering role is being able help organise awareness events, such as the successful pub quiz night, that brings together people living with Crohn's or Colitis.

I would describe my volunteering experience as compassionate, fulfilling, and inspiring. I would definitely recommend volunteering, even if you don't have Crohn's or Colitis yourself, as everyone is very friendly and you will have many opportunities to meet lots of people, raise awareness and help fundraise.
