Perianal fistula - is a new treatment needed?

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) - the body that assesses drugs and treatments for use on the NHS - is looking into a potential new treatment for perianal fistula in Crohn's Disease.

Perianal fistula affects more than 20% of people with Crohn’s - see our Living with a fistula (pdf) for more information.

At this stage, NICE is gathering comments and views on whether they should conduct a full assessment into this or not. Crohn’s and Colitis UK is able to respond as a stakeholder.

In order to inform our input, it would be really helpful if you could share your experiences with us, if you have personally lived with this and had treatment, successful or otherwise. In particular, NICE is looking for the following:

  • Understanding how perianal fistula has impacted on your life and quality of life
  • What treatments you have had for it
  • How well these have worked
  • Whether a new treatment is needed

We would very much appreciate any comments or insight you are able to give us on this, emailing these to ppr@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk. We would like to use some quotes in our submission, to illustrate the points we make, but will not use any names.
