Would you believe the Bluebell Walk or Cycle ride started 33 years ago? A local Crohn's & Colitis UK volunteer, David Matthews, came up with the idea. He wanted a local event to help raise funds and awareness for Crohn's & Colitis UK. He picked Rutland Water due to its beautiful woodland and shore. It provided a relaxed spot for participants to do their walk or ride and then picnic if the weather was good enough. The event has always had a calm feel to it, allowing all ages and abilities to go at their own pace and to pick a challenge that suits their circumstances.
In 2019 we had nearly 300 participants and raised a healthy amount for the charity. We hope to smash that this year, but we need your help!

There's a 2, 5 or 9 mile walk and you can decide on the day which one you'd prefer. If you find the weather is great and you're losing yourself amongst the beauty of Rutland Water, then why not keep going? Do the next challenge! Or if you're feeling tired then turn to head back to the registration village.

Participants will be given passports which will be stamped at each marshal point, so you can proudly show your friends and family. The 2 mile walk takes you through the Barnsdale Woods which will be filled with a carpet of bluebells. It really is breathtaking! Then you head back to the registration village and carry on around to Sykes Lane for the 5 mile walk. If you fancy it, you can continue across the dam, to the Normanton Church. This is the longer and more strenuous challenge!
If however a cycle ride is more your cup of tea, choose to ride the perimeter of Rutland Water. Keeping the shore on your left, you will see some magnificent views and take in the wonderful local wildlife. The shorter, 17 mile route cuts out the peninsula but if you choose the longer route of 25 miles, you'll also navigate around this fabulous piece of land that reaches right out into the reservoir.

This years Bluebell Walk or Cycle Ride has a little bit of a royal spin on it... Families are encouraged to get involved in the coronation theme of this years fancy dress competition, with many prizes in store, it's worthwhile getting out those glad rags.
It's so hard to crown the best dressed - everyone makes such an effort. The team I cannot speak for, but I know I've got a crown to pop on and maybe even a wig. Perhaps I'll get my face painted if I'm lucky!

It's always hard to predict the British weather but we can guarantee this event will be great fun. The volunteering team are always positive and cheery, helping to keep you motivated as you make your way round. There's a great atmosphere for those wanting to hang around in the event village to play games, picnic or maybe just rest their weary legs for a minute or two.
After finding out I had Crohns in 2017, I gained the confidence and decided to participate in these walks. They're a brilliant opportunity to raise more funds to keep research going and to build more awareness for people who are living with Crohn's and Colitis.
