The Great British Public Toilet Map is an easy to navigate website that enables people to find their nearest publicly accessible toilet, no matter where they are in the UK. It's the UK's largest ever public toilet database, detailing over 8,000 public toilets including council facilities, train stations, community toilet schemes as well as shopping centres and libraries.
You can search for toilets in your local area, or an area you might be travelling too. You can also filter results based on your preference such as the need for wheelchair access or baby changing facilities. There is even the option to add new toilets that may not have been captured as well as toilets that are no longer open. The website is optimised to be accessible across all devices; desktops; tablets and, crucially, smartphones. Location-based services flag up the five nearest toilets when users are out and about.
The website was developed by researchers at the Royal College of Art, from UK Research Council funding and social investor Nominet Trust. The researchers contacted over 400 UK local authorities using the freedom of information act to request the data on current public toilet provision in that area. The website now holds details of over 8000 toilets around the UK. The researchers hope that people will use and edit the map and so help make the map better for everyone.
